Ancora sull'open

Joe Hewitt sul suo blog commenta sulla openness di Android; rispetto a quelle di Steve Jobs mi sembrano considerazioni più meditate e circostanziate; infatti Joe afferma che:

"There is no doubt that Android is the most open of all major mobile operating systems, and they are to be commended for this. Coming from iOS, I've been pleasantly surprised at how much more configurable Android is".

D'altro canto, c'è qualcosa che "trattiene" Android dal poter essere ancora più aperto:

"there is clearly something keeping them from being even more open. That something is probably the carriers, and not Google's management philosophy".

In fin dei conti si è trattato di un "do ut des": Google ha dato ai carrier quello che volevano, e in cambio ha ricevuto tutto il sostegno finanziario e di marketing che solo corazzate come loro sono in grado di dispiegare; quindi:

"While I can criticize Google for compromising Android in an effort to please the carriers, I have to admit that if they hadn't done this, Android would very likely be irrelevant today" - insomma, è stata una premeditata (e oculata?) scelta strategica, dettata soprattutto dalla volontà di far raggiungere ad Android una share di mercato significativa in pochissimo tempo.
Se questo fosse stato lo stesso obiettivo anche per altri prodotti espressamente (è più "puramente") open, tipo Mozilla, allora:

"If Firefox had required subsidies and advertising to reach 20% market share, Mozilla may have had to make compromises too".

Infine, però, e qui risuono con Jim, quello che ci deprime un po' è vedere

"the term "open" watered down so much. It bothers me that so many people's first exposure to the idea of open source is an occasional code drop, and not a vibrant community of collaborators like I discovered ten years ago with Mozilla. I am hoping that at some point it becomes practical for Google to move Android towards the Firefox model of open source, because I am sure that they want to".

Tutto sommato mi ento anche io ottimisticamente di pensare che Google vorrà spingere Android verso un modello più puramente open ... un giorno .... forse .... :-)
